The experience I had during the Federal Hill performance was something new and very enjoyable. It was something I have never done before and I had so much fun acting childlike and interacting with new people.

  • How did this experience change your perception of the Federal Hill landscape?

- The Federal Hill experience definitely changed my perception of the Federal Hill landscape. I am particularly interested in how high the landscape stands in the middle of the city. The park seems like something against the big modern city, Inner Harbor. Bunch of tall buildings on the other side stand side by side and give viewers the feeling of being overwhelmed and dominated, but the Federal Hill park, something very organic and nature, not like modern city, also stands as tall and high on the opposite side, a very unique part of Baltimore. The landscape of the Federal Hill can be described as roughly triangular, tall, wide, and trapezoid on front side, and very steep. Before climbing up to the top, I thought that the place is just huge and enormous. But, after the performance, having been to the top, I realized that the park is smaller than I actually expected, maybe because of different perspectives, one from the bottom and one from the top. So, I recognized that the position of where you stand affects how you see its landscape.

  • Did this experience evoke new feelings, ideas, or attachments to this place that you did not have before? share your experience about these things.

- Before the show, I really did not feel or think about this place at all. But, during the performance, I was able to endlessly interact with the place. For examples, I walked, ran, crawled, jumped, sat on the bench, and lied down on the grass. I did a bunch of things that I would have done when I was a kid. So, this feeling of becoming child again is something I found very fun and quite entertaining. Also, when I lied down on the grass, I felt that I belong to the nature, and looking at the blue sky filled with flying birds made me nature. I became attached to nature through this particular place. Also, standing on the top of the hill makes me feel I am over control of everything. Being in the position where I can look down all the people, buildings, and restaurants made me feel invincible and powerful. But, more than that, I also felt very calm and peaceful. In the city, most places are busy, chaotic, and disastrous, but the Federal Hill is totally different, more like peaceful heaven touching the sky.

  • How did the broadcast sound affect the piece as well as your experience as a participant?

- The broadcast sound definitely affected my experience. The echo of speakers from the Art Visionary Museum along with that of four individual people’s megaphones spread across the Inner Harbor  and seemed like bouncing off the echo between tall buildings and through the surfaces of water. For me, the echo sounded more like seagulls crying and birds chirping. Especially, the feedback sound was, at first so annoying and distracting, but later as I got used to it, it became more like peaceful, relaxing sound of birds talking to one another. When I lied down on the grass, the megaphone sound awakens my unconcious feeling toward nature. In other words, touching soils, smelling the grass, looking up at the blue sky, and breathing fresh air was not sufficent. Listening to the megaphone which sounded more like birds singing fully absorbed me into nature.
